The Corpus Christi Area Youth Orchestra is comprised of three ensembles: the Philharmonica, the Sinfonietta, and the Youth Orchestra. The Youth Orchestra is a full orchestra performing standard orchestral literature. The Sinfonietta is comprised of beginner to intermediate string players performing string orchestra literature. The Philharmonica is comprised of beginner string players and is an introduction to playing in a group setting. The three groups combine on occasion as artistic and educational goals merit. By rehearsing and performing exciting and challenging repertoire appropriate for the level of each group, each ensemble provides talented young musicians a musical experience of the highest artistic standard. Membership is open to any area musician no older than 20 years of age by September 30, 2011. Older players are invited to participate, but should call for details.

Furthermore, research has shown that students' involvement in music programs is crucial to a complete education. Musical study develops critical thinking and self discipline skills and improves a child's early cognitive development, basic math and reading abilities, self-esteem, SAT scores, ability to work in teams, spatial reasoning skills, and school attendance. Also, researchers have found that children involved with music education are more likely to graduate from high school and attend college, and are less likely to be involved with criminal activity and substance abuse.
