John GiordanoPrior to joining the Corpus Christi Symphoy Orchestra as Music Director in 2004, Maestro John Giordano served as Music Director and Conductor of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra for 28 seasons. During that time, he propelled the orchestra to a fully professional and artistically outstanding ensemble. He also founded the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra, which appeared in Carnegie Hall and toured Spain, Mexico, and the People's Republic of China. A number of acclaimed recordings with both ensembles have been produced under his direction. He has appeared as guest conductor in Europe, Mexico, South America, England, China, Philippines, Taiwan and throughout the United States. Giordano has conducted world premieres of works by Gian Carlo Menotti, Benjamin Lees, Samuel Adler, Ezra Laderman, and Joaquin Rodrigo. In addition, he has recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Chamber Orchestra, and the National Radio and Television Orchestra of Belgium.
Maestro Giordano's background encompasses composing, arranging, and teaching as well as conducting. His published compositions include award-winning film scores for the documentaries Milepost 407, and A Great Hall Rises, celebrating the dedication of the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Performance Hall. In 1989, the George Gershwin estate gave him special authorization to arrange Cuban Overture, Rhapsody in Blue and sections of Porgy and Bess for chamber orchestra. He also conducted his adaptation of jazz composer-performer Ornette Coleman's Skies of America with major European orchestras in festivals and concert halls throughout Europe.
Dedicated to music education, he is a founder of the Colorado College Summer Music Festival for Young Artists and has been on the faculties of Texas Christian University, the University of North Texas, and Tarleton State University. In addition, he is Music Director Emeritus of the Youth Orchestra of Greater Fort Worth and has served as Jury Chairman of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition since 1973.
Maestro Giordano holds BM and MM degrees from Texas Christian University. He was a Fulbright Scholar to the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels, where he earned the Premier Prix with Distinction and the Diplome Superieur. He has post-graduate study at the University of Southern California and has completed studies for the Ph. D. in Music from the University of North Texas. In 1980, Texas Wesleyan University bestowed upon him the honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts.
In 1996, Maestro Giordano was recognized by the trustees of Texas Christian University by naming the piano wing of the Mary D. and F. Howard Walsh Performing Arts Center in his honor. In 2000, the University awarded him the title of Distinguished Fellow in Music.
